Your audio never leaves your device
Recording, transcription, and speaker identification run entirely in your browser. The audio is stored only on your device (in the browser’s local storage) and is never uploaded to us or anyone else.
iPhone and Apple Watch app
The iPhone app records and transcribes on the phone, with a speech model that runs on the device. The audio stays on your devices: a recording made on an Apple Watch is sent only to your own paired iPhone, where it is transcribed, and audio is never uploadedto us or anyone else. The speech model is downloaded from Hugging Face the first time the app needs it; no recording, text or account information is sent with that download. If you sign in and sync, what syncs is meeting text, exactly as on the web — never audio.
What we collect
- Account info (email, name) — to sign you in, via our auth provider.
- Meeting text (transcripts, summaries, speaker labels) — only if you sign in and sync a meeting, so you can search and access it across devices. Syncing is optional and free for every signed-in account. Stored encrypted at rest. Audio is never uploaded, on any account.
- Usage events— counts and error codes that tell us whether the product works. No content; see “Product telemetry” below.
- Billing info— none: the service is free for everyone. If paid plans launch, payments will be handled by our payment processor; we won't store card numbers.
Product telemetry
To see whether the product works — for example, whether a watch recording reached the phone and was transcribed — the website and the apps send us small usage events: the kind of event, counts and durations, error codes, the language a transcript was read in, the platform, browser or device type and app version, a random identifier created for each browser or app install, and for some events the id of the meeting concerned. They never contain audio, transcript text, titles, summaries or names.
That install identifier is also attached to meetings you sync, and the events our server records for sync and summaries carry your account id when you are signed in, so for a signed-in account these events can be connected to it. Events recorded with your account id are deleted when you delete your account. All usage events are deleted after 90 days.
Service providers (processors)
- Clerk — authentication. The iPhone app also sends Clerk an app-specific device identifier (Apple’s identifierForVendor), the device model and the iOS version with its requests — at present on every launch, including when you are not signed in.
- Neon (Postgres) — cloud storage of your meeting text (only if you sign in and sync).
- Google Gemini / Anthropic — generates the summary from the transcript text only.
- Google Gemini (embeddings) — for “Ask your meetings”, synced meeting text is converted into search vectors stored with your account. Audio is never involved; deleting a meeting deletes its vectors.
- Stripe — payment processing (via Clerk), if paid plans launch.
- Vercel — hosting.
Your rights
You can delete any synced meeting from your account at any time (“Remove from account”), export your notes, and delete your account. EU/UK users have rights under the GDPR (access, deletion, portability, etc.); California users under the CCPA. To exercise any of these rights, email hello@nowrecording.com.
